HTTPS://PRIMITIVEPATHWAYS.COM In this video I visit a prehistoric quartz quarry in central Virginia. Quartz was used for spearpoints, arrow points, and knives wherever it was found for thousands of years. This is one of the rare sources for toolstone that's not been destroyed by development. Here is the deal stone usually doesn't do well against bone and usually it breaks steel doesn't best damage ur gonna get on steel is a small dent or a chip on the edge wich are easily fixable with sharpening a shattered stone tip cant be fixed as such the steel offers much more reliability for penetrating bone than stone does and this makes it better for hunting than stone now as far as mass production is concerned its easier to mass produce steel points than stone as well because to make proper stone arrowheads u need decent flintkjnapping skills and most knappers take 3-4 hours to produce a single stone arrowhead with steel?U can grab a spoon and turn it into a arrowhead with a vice and a hammer u can flatten it sharpen the edges and than use either a hacksaw to cut the arrow shape or just sharpen it till u get a tip on it now steel does take more tools to work with but this is everyday tools that everyone has laying around the house so it shouldn't be a problem for anyone to produce spoon arrowheads with relative ease so steel is easier to mass produce in our modern day and age but stone was easier due to people not having the proper tools to work with steel like metals back in the day as such stone was the main arrowhead Making method all u need tor flintknapping is a bopper and a flaker wich are very easy to produce with household materials a simple nail attached to a wooden handle will server well as a flaker and a bopper can be made with a set of pliers or heavy steel piece of even a hammer if thats all u have or hammer head or just a sturdy big rock like people used back in the day they all perform relatively the same for knapping anyway the point is steel offers much more mass production today than stone heads do and steel offers also the ability to penetrate bone better than stone does and on top of all steel points last stupidly longer than stone points do i had a steel point wich i abused against walls rocks and what not and i shot it for more than 50 times and it still works like fine wine with sharpening it broke only a few shafts but it suffered very little damage so steel offers not only better mass production and better killing performance but it also offers much longer durability lasting unlike stone wich can shatter on impact with bone

    well made stone points work well but break easy.....well made steel points work well but don't break easy. just as soon as the native American bow hunters got their hands on iron they stopped using stone. most stone points are only good for one shot. if you miss the point breaks, if it hits bone it breaks and you can't practice much with your hunting arrows tipped with stone, because they usually break. stone points are cool to look at but you are better off making your points from steel. they don't break, stone does. so, take "a break" from stone and use common sense....unbreakable "steel".

    • @primitivepathways
      @primitivepathways Месяц назад

      Hey Dave, from my own personal experience stone points can be surprisingly durable. How durable they are depends on a lot of factors, some of which are: the strength of the stone you use, its thickness, how well your arrow is flying when it hits the target, the strength of the hafting materials, and what the arrow hits. Stone points that hit their intended targets (i.e. the vital organs of game animals) usually suffer very minor damage, with slight dings off the tip or a corner being the most common. Even arrows that miss their targets may not damage the stone point if it doesn't hit anything hard like a rock. Soft loamy dirt or clay doesn't normally damage a stone point, although it may dull the edge. I once missed a deer with a 40-lb bow and the arrow was tipped with a thin obsidian point. The arrow hit a black locust tree and buried the point into the bark and partially into the wood. The point was still intact and only broke when I tried to force it out. I've shot a number of game animals with stone points in both North America and South Africa and the vast majority are still usable. As long as your arrow hits its mark, I've found stone points to be just as effective as steel in terms of lethality. Now, if your shot is off and you hit a shoulder blade or a heavy leg bone, a stone point will likely break and a steel point will most likely embed itself in the bone. But the reason for wounding that animals is poor shot placement, not the performance of the point. Either way, you won't recover that animal. Every time I've lost an animal it was due to poor shot placement...not poor performance of the stone point. Steel is definitely stronger, yes, and will hold up better if the shot is bad and that can sometimes buy you a little advantage, but again....it's bad shot placement. Every time I've hit that animal's vitals with a stone point, they don't go far and I've always recovered them.

      @@primitivepathways i agree, one of the bucks i shot with an obsidian point passed right through the heart , did not break , another buck i shot using a novaculite point passed through the lungs and only the back of the point broke off. had it been steel none of it would have broken, still, it did it's job. but another buck i shot from about 4 yards with a stone point hit the shoulder and did not penetrate sufficiently to kill the animal quickly, ( it probably broke), he ran off and no blood trail, never found him. i'm not saying stone points are no good, that would be denying thousands of years of history. what i am saying is there are better things to use which is why the stone point was replaced thousands of years ago by points made of metal. the current fascination with stone points can be a good thing and it can also be a very bad thing for the game animal because not every one has the skill to design and flake excellent points but will try poorly made points just to "follow the fad" . i know this happens. face it, some people are not intelligent about these things. a guy who knows how to make excellent points and knows how to close in on the game animal they go after and can put that arrow just where they want it will have real success using stone points. i myself have abandoned stone over steel because if designed and made well they (steel points) are IMO just as good, and better when it comes to durability. also, i want to practice alot with my hunting arrows for the sack of knowledge, and confidence. so, when i say "use common sense" i am not saying don't use stone points, but if you choose to use them make sure you know what you are doing. that's all. take care and good hunting, may your arrows always fly straight. adios

    I’ve actually done this off my 60lbs Korean bow (but I need a thumb ring). I get a longer draw though and I kind of anchor just under my nose diagonally, so it doesn’t get in the way. I also point down the arrow because the thumb ring moves my index finger forward so I can’t do it this specific way, but with all those variations I’ve managed to get some really accurate shots. It also works with Slavic draw too apparently
